Ready to homeschool Fifth Grade? Whether you’re brand new to homeschooling or an experienced homeschooler, I’m happy you are here.
My goal is to take the guess work, prep time, and expense out of homeschooling Fifth Grade by providing free how-to videos, organization checklists, supply lists, and detailed daily workplans so you can homeschool using the free, high-quality Core Knowledge Fifth Grade curriculum and Fifth Grade (Year 6) MEP Math curriculum.
Free High Quality Curriculum for Fifth Grade
MEP Math and Core Knowledge are both excellent, academically strong curriculums you can use to provide your fifth grade student with a high-quality education at home. While both curriculums were originally developed for use in classroom settings, I’ve put together how-to videos, organization checklists, supply lists, and daily schedules so you can successfully use both of these curriculums to homeschool fifth grade. All of my support resources are free and available here on my website.
MEP Math was developed in Europe and is provided free by the Center for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching. All lesson plans, worksheets, and supporting materials can be downloaded for free from their website and curriculum is available for preschool through high school. Core Knowledge is a free curriculum developed and provided by the Core Knowledge Foundation in the United States. Their comprehensive curriculum covers language arts, social studies, and science. They are also in the process of developing a math curriculum! Click here to see instructions for downloading the curriculum for homeschooling fifth grade.
What Your Student Will Learn in Fifth Grade?
Your student will be continuing to deepen their math skills as well as make great strides in their reading comprehension, grammar, and composition skills. They’ll learn about key events in U.S. and world history, hear stories and poetry that shape how we think about our world, and dive deep into how the earth and human body work.
Fifth Grade Math
For math you will be using the free MEP Math Year 6 curriculum. Your student will be continuing to improve their skills working with fractions, decimals, percentages, and negative numbers while also deepening their understanding of measurements, shapes, and basic statistics. They’ll learn to work with decimals up to the thousandths, multiply fractions by integers, and understand and use both SI and Imperial units of measurement. They’ll also work with shapes including learning the circle definitions as well as angle definitions and properties.
Fifth Grade Language Arts
The Fifth Grade language arts curriculum from Core Knowledge encompasses a wide range of subjects including reading, spelling, penmanship, grammar, language mechanics, composition, literature, vocabulary, and so much more. Your student will continue to improve their reading comprehension, grammar, language mechanics, and spelling skills while also widening their research skills to a variety of different sources and continue to expand the types of writing they are producing. This year will have them writing stories and poems as well as reports, summaries, research essays, and essays explaining a process. They’ll dive deep into some of the well known poets in history including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Emily Dickinson, and Langston Hughes. Throughout the year they’ll be reading famous stories including Don Quixote, Little Women, Sherlock Holmes, Tom Sawyer, and Shakespeare.
Fifth Grade Social Studies
In the Fifth Grade Core Knowledge History and Geography curriculum your student will continue to learn more about geography including Central and South America, world lakes, and a full unit on the geography of the United States. For world history they’ll learn about the Maya, Inca, and Aztec civilizations as European exploration, trade, and colonization. They’ll also learn about the Renaissance, the Reformation, and England’s Golden Age. This school year they’ll study the geography, history, and culture of feudal Japan as well as Russia. In American history your student will learn about the Civil War as well as the trends of westward expansion both before and after the war. They’ll also spend time learning about the impact of that expansion on Native Americans.
Fifth Grade Science
In the Fifth Grade Core Knowledge Science curriculum, your student will investigate the chemistry of matter as well as look at energy and matter in ecosystems. They’ll model earth’s systems and learn about protecting earth’s resources. They’ll round out the year with a study of astronomy as well as human hormones and reproduction.
