Ready to homeschool Kindergarten? Whether you’re brand new to homeschooling or an experienced homeschooler, I’m happy you are here.
My goal is to take the guess work and expense out of homeschooling by providing free how-to videos, organization checklists, supply lists, and detailed daily workplans so you can homeschool using the free high-quality Core Knowledge Kindergarten curriculum and the MEP Math Year 1 Curriculum.
Free High-Quality Homeschool Curriculum
MEP Math and Core Knowledge are both excellent, academically strong curriculums you can use to provide your student with a high-quality education at home. While both curriculums were originally developed for use in classroom settings, I’ve put together how-to videos, organization checklists, supply lists, and daily schedules so you can successfully use both of these curriculums to homeschool Kindergarten. All of my support resources are free and available here on my website.
MEP Math was developed in Europe and is provided free by the Center for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching. All lesson plans, worksheets, and supporting materials can be downloaded for free from their website for preschool through high school. Click here to see instructions for downloading the Year 1 curriculum for homeschooling.
Core Knowledge is a free curriculum developed and provided by the Core Knowledge Foundation in the United States. Their comprehensive curriculum covers language arts, social studies, and science. They are also in the process of developing a math curriculum! Click here to see instructions for downloading the Kindergarten curriculum for homeschooling.
What Your Student Will Learn in Kindergarten?
Kindergarten is such an exciting time! Across all subjects, your student will be establishing their base understanding of how to work with numbers and words. They’ll learn addition and subtraction, handwriting, as well as basic reading and spelling skills. They’ll hear famous stories including nursery rhymes, fables, and tall tales. In history they’ll be inspired by famous people and events and in science they’ll begin to learn how the world works.
Kindergarten Math
For math, you can use the free MEP Math Year 1 curriculum. Your student will be learning to work with numbers 0-20 including basic addition and subtraction. They’ll learn to place numbers in increasing or decreasing order and also learn to use inequality sings. They’ll learn to recognize simple 2D shapes, measure lines, read a clock, calculate simple money problems, use a simple calendar, and so much more.
Kindergarten Language Arts
The free Kindergarten language arts curriculum from Core Knowledge encompasses a wide range of subjects including reading, spelling, handwriting, literature, vocabulary, basic language mechanics, and so much more. Your student will begin learning to read and spell simple words, understand how sentences are structured, use basic capitalization and punctuation, and hear a range of stories including nursery rhymes, poetry, fables, folk stories, and tall tales.
Kindergarten Social Studies
For social studies your student will be studying history and geography. In the Core Knowledge History and Geography curriculum your student will learn about how maps and globes work and the locations of major oceans and the continents. They’ll also study U.S. history including Native American people past and present, early European explorations and settlement, and key figures in U.S. history including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. In addition, they will learn to recognize and become familiar with the American flag, Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, and The White House. These concepts lay the groundwork for later grades where they will dive deeper into geography as well as both world history and U.S. history.
Kindergarten Science
In the Core Knowledge Science curriculum, your student will learn about plants and how they grow, animals and what they need, the human body, how magnetism work, seasons and weather, and the ways humans can take care of the earth. They will also be introduced to famous scientists such as George Washington Carver, Jane Goodall, and Wilbur and Orville Wright.
