My goal is to take the guess work and expense out of homeschooling by providing free how-to videos, organization checklists, supply lists, and detailed daily workplans so you can homeschool using the free, high-quality Second Grade Core Knowledge curriculum and the Year 3 MEP Math curriculum.
Free High Quality Curriculum
MEP Math and Core Knowledge are both excellent, academically strong curriculums you can use to provide your student with a high-quality education at home. While both curriculums were originally developed for use in classroom settings, I’ve put together how-to videos, organization checklists, supply lists, and daily schedules so you can successfully use these curriculums to homeschool Second Grade. All of my support resources are free and available here on my website.
MEP Math was developed in Europe and is provided free by the Center for Innovation in Mathematics Teaching. All lesson plans, worksheets, and supporting materials can be downloaded for free from their website and curriculum is available for preschool through high school. Core Knowledge is a free curriculum developed and provided by the Core Knowledge Foundation in the United States. Their comprehensive curriculum covers language arts, social studies, and science. What Your Student Will Learn in Second Grade?
Your student will be learning to work more confidently with numbers and make great strides with their reading, spelling, grammar, and composition skills. They’ll hear famous stories from around the world, learn about ancient Greek mythology, and American folk heroes and tall tales. In history they’ll be inspired by famous people and events and in science they’ll dig deeper into how the world works.
Second Grade Math
For math you will be using the free MEP Math Year 3 curriculum. Your student will be learning to confidently work with numbers in the thousands, start memorizing their multiplication facts up to 10×10, and understand simple fractions (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/8) and be able to calculate fractions of simple quantities including hours on a clock. They’ll work with negative numbers in context, learn to round to the nearest 10 or 100, and work with units of money, length, weight, capacity, and time. They’ll also learn to work with divisors, factors, and multiples as well as learn the names and properties of common shapes, and so much more.
Second Grade Language Arts
The Second Grade language arts curriculum from Core Knowledge encompasses a wide range of subjects including reading, spelling, penmanship, grammar, language mechanics, composition, literature, vocabulary, and so much more. Your student will continue to improve their reading and spelling skills, write short compositions, learn the basic parts of speech and sentence structure, and be exposed to fiction, informational texts, and poetry. They will hear famous stories from around the world and learn about the mythology of ancient Greece as well as American folk tales and tall tales.
Second Grade Social Studies
For social studies your student will be studying history and geography. In the Core Knowledge History and Geography curriculum your student will be improving their understanding of maps and geographical features as well as the geography of North and South America. They’ll also study world history including the ancient cultures of India, China, and Greece and be introduced to the modern geography and culture of Japan. In U.S. history they will learn about the Constitution’s role in American government, the War of 1812, and dive deeper into Western Expansion including the lives of pioneers, the Oregon Trail, and the Pony Express as well as the effects this expansion had on Native Americans. Your student will also study the Civil War as well as be introduced to U.S. immigration and citizenship and a number of Civil Rights leaders including Susan B. Anthony, Mary McLeod Bethune, Jackie Robinson, Cesar Chavez, and many others.
Second Grade Science
In the Core Knowledge Science curriculum, your student will learn about the cycles in nature, insects, the cells and systems of the human body, magnetism, and simple machines. They will also be introduced to famous scientists including Anton van Leeuwenhoek, Elijah McCoy, Florence Nightingale, and Daniel Hale Williams.
